Terry bed sheet

What are the advantages of terry cloth bed sheets?

What is terry cloth?

In this Mister Sandman guide, we explain everything about terry cloth. The word comes from the French frotteer and means to rub off. Terry cloth is a textile fabric with special absorbency; large loops give the fabric a greater volume and can absorb a lot of moisture. Terry cloth is a fabric made from special yarns. A yarn consists of several threads. It is made up of at least two twisted threads. The yarn is much more tear-resistant and uniform than a single yarn, making it immensely important in fabric production. Fabrics made from it prove to be durable, abrasion-resistant, and shape-stable. These properties are particularly convincing in the area of upholstery and furniture fabrics as indispensable qualities.

Terry or terry cloth: The difference lies in the processing

The terms terry and terry cloth are often used interchangeably. However, there is a significant difference between these two fabrics – namely in the processing and in the use. Terry is a smooth fabric created by twisting the yarn. Terry cloth, on the other hand, is not a smooth fabric, as it has loops on both sides. The loops of the smooth thread are raised during the weaving process. This makes the towel feel even softer. Therefore, terry cloth is the higher quality variant. An advantage over terry products is that the threads cannot be pulled out.

Terry or terry cloth: Different processing

In terry, the yarn is a so-called effect yarn. This means that the loops visible in the finished fabric are created solely by the yarn used (loop yarn or terry yarn). In other words, terry is a fabric whose yarn is twisted into loops or curls. It is used, for example, for upholstery or in fashion. Woven terry, on the other hand, consists of a fabric that has loops on both sides. These can be more or less long and more or less dense. These loops or curls are created during weaving on a special terry weaving machine. Furthermore, there is also knitted terry, which is produced not on looms but on special knitting machines. These are more comparable to knitting machines.

There are four basic qualities:

  • Walk terry: The felting process achieves a full, soft, and fluffy feel, which makes it very absorbent.
  • Twisted terry: Twisting makes twisted terry firmer, more textured, and more durable than regular terry, but it is not as voluminous, fluffy, and soft. The terry effect, meaning the ability to absorb water, is higher. The fibers stand upright, and the fabric feels pleasant and warm on the skin.
  • Velour terry: In the production of velour terry, the loops are cut, resulting in a softer surface. Velour terry is mostly used for bathrobes or beach towels. Usually, only one side is equipped with velour terry, while the other side is made with walk terry to maintain absorbency.
  • Knitted terry: is not woven but knitted. Knitted terry has good absorbency and a slight massaging effect.

Terry is mainly used for bathrobes, towels, and home textiles. In this form, everyone surely knows it from their own home. Terry can usually be washed without any problems at 60°C and is also suitable for tumble drying. Therefore, it is particularly hygienic. In combination with its fluffy, pleasantly soft surface and the fact that terry does not need to be ironed, the material is also very popular for changing pads, shirts, pants, and onesies for babies and toddlers. Even bed linen, swaddling blankets, and pads for cribs and strollers can be wonderfully made from terry. Terry can be easily sewn with other fabrics such as cotton woven fabric or jersey.

Advantages of terry fitted sheets

The advantages are obvious:

  • Good grip and rough surface
  • Breathable
  • Temperature equalizing
  • Iron-free
  • Shape-retaining
  • Recommended for people who sweat a lot, as it is very absorbent

As a high-quality, modern fabric, fleece is suitable for many applications. The material has a very pleasant surface that feels very nice on the skin. The snug material is particularly hygienic and easy to clean. Therefore, it is used not only in the sanitary sector but also in the outfitting of babies and toddlers. Moisture-regulating, heat-insulating, and breathable, this fabric is suitable not only for towels, bathrobes, etc., but also for onesies, bibs, pajamas, and underwear. Fleece is also used as bed linen.

Care instructions for terry bed sheets

Please always pay attention to the manufacturer's care instructions. Ideally, terry bed sheets are washed between 60 and 95 degrees. Since excess dye can settle during the first washes of new terry items, it is advisable to wash light and intensely colored terry items separately and never leave wet laundry lying on top of each other for long. Also wash strong or bright colors at 60°C; at lower temperatures (30°C or 40°C), there may be color fading and bleeding.

    Discoloration of fabrics

Please do not wash white items with colored applications or embroidery at 90°C, as the high washing temperature can also lead to discoloration of the goods. Terry cloth is an extremely absorbent fabric and requires a lot of water when washing. If you want to receive a fluffy product, you should not turn on the energy-saving program of your washing machine. Shedding of excess lint is normal during the first washes. However, you can avoid excessive linting by loading the washing machine at least halfway. With too low a load, the goods are exposed to increased friction from the washing drum.

    Do not use fabric softener

Try to avoid using fabric softener. The lint that is washed out during washing can not detach from the goods if too much fabric softener is used. A film is created that reduces water absorption when drying. It is recommended not to use all-purpose detergents on colored terry fabrics, as these contain optical brighteners. Ideally, terry goods should not be dried in the dryer (suitability see care label) at too high a temperature, as this keeps them nice and fluffy. If you do not use a dryer, you should knead the towels well after air drying, as this will also make them soft again. Please cut any loose threads as short as possible. This prevents further pulling of the loops and keeps the surface unchanged.
