What advantage does a loft bed have?
The loft bed
A loft bed is a bed whose sleeping area is significantly (more than about 1 meter) above the floor, so that the space gained underneath can be used as additional living or storage space. Therefore, loft beds are particularly well suited for small rooms or niches to use them effectively. Most models are made of wood; however, there is also a small selection of metal frames available in specialty stores. To protect against the cold from the stone floor, beds were previously built on elevated platforms. The loft bed and the bunk bed are often thrown into the same pot. Unjustly: Loft bed and bunk bed are two different types of beds! The sleeping area of a loft bed is located more than one meter off the ground, unlike a bunk bed – either on a frame or mounted directly to the wall. This moves the sleeping area up to the ceiling and creates additional space for, for example, a workspace or a cozy seating area. A bunk bed, on the other hand, consists of at least two beds stacked on top of each other. This provides multiple sleeping areas but does not create any additional storage space. There are not only loft beds for children but also for adults. They usually find their place in old buildings with high ceilings. Loft beds are very space-saving, as no floor space is lost.
Loft bed for children
There are the funniest and coolest children's loft beds with structures and the most interesting designs, from fire truck to Star Wars to Hello Kitty, everything is possible. The version with the slide is also very popular among children.
There are different types of beds for children:
- Classic children's loft bed, the space underneath can be used. You can place either a desk or a wardrobe there. The height of the bed should be at least 1.50 m.
- Play Beds: There are many different variants, you can attach slides or climbing ropes and bed textiles that cover numerous themes like pirate, princess, knight, etc. The height is usually about one meter to 1.50 meters.
- Bunk Beds - here is one bed on top and one below. Such beds are usually found in hostels and vacation apartments.
Loft Bed for Adults
When purchasing, a robust construction is especially important. High-quality loft beds are therefore often made from a solid wood like solid pine, oak, or beech. Pine is particularly popular – it is especially stable, solid, and also robust. It can even withstand particularly heavy loads – moreover, the natural wood look is a true classic – and actually fits into almost any room. In contrast to the loft bed, the bunk bed (also: loft bed) is an arrangement where at least two beds are firmly connected on top of each other, e.g., the double bunk bed. There is no significant storage space under the bed. The most popular size for loft beds is 90x200 cm or 140x200 cm. Loft beds for adults can also be assembled by oneself with a little craftsmanship. There are numerous instructions for this on the internet. Loft beds come in various colors and materials. The most common are wooden loft beds. Pine is usually used here. Pine is very stable. There is also a smaller selection of metal loft beds.

Of course, there is a DIN standard for this, as for almost everything in Germany. The "German Institute for Standardization" (short DIN) is a service provider for standardization and normalization. The DIN creates standards for almost everything with its more than 30,000 external experts from the economy. The most well-known are the DIN standards for paper sizes, e.g., "DIN A4."

The DIN standards EN 747-1 and EN 747-2 are of particular importance when purchasing a loft bed or bunk bed. If a loft or bunk bed does not meet at least these standards, one should stay away from them.
