What is a duvet?

Definition of a blanket

The term "blanket" encompasses far more than just simple "covering up". A blanket stands for warmth, comfort, sleep, or relaxation. It should have properties that meet individual needs. The duvet, as a special form of a (bed) blanket, can offer some decisive quality features for this purpose.

Duvet Definition

A duvet basically consists of a cover fabric, the shell, and a filling. Both the type of fabric for the shell and the filling material are variable. The usually rectangular shape of the duvet is provided with quilting stitches in different arrangements. Longitudinal or transverse quilting stitches are possible, as well as both together.

The most produced form: the cassette quilting

The cassette quilting has now become established. In this type of quilting, the duvet is divided into three times four or four times six cassettes. However, the fabric strips are not "quilted through," but are connected by bridges of varying heights. Depending on the desired heat retention, they are dimensioned between two and ten centimeters high. A key goal of the quilting is to protect the filling material from shifting. Ensuring an optimal and even distribution of the filling material means providing uniform warmth. Since duvets are supposed to be washable, this method also largely prevents the filling material from clumping together.

Use of the duvet

The materials used for the cover and filling determine whether the duvet can be used as a summer, winter, or all-season duvet. For all-season duvets, duo duvets are usually produced, meaning they can be connected together at the push of a button. This creates warming double duvets for winter.

Filling of the duvet

Cotton, a natural product, is considered particularly suitable material for the cover of a duvet. However, synthetic fibers are also being considered nowadays. Down as filling material represents a high-quality natural material. It embodies properties such as high elasticity and an extremely low weight. Down duvets are therefore particularly light, warming, and breathable. But the natural product cashmere can also be used as filling. Nevertheless, synthetic filling materials do not necessarily perform worse in terms of thermal regulation and washability. Nowadays, there are polyester fillings that can certainly compete with the properties of natural fabrics.

The down filling

The most well-known is the quilt with down filling. This is not bought as often today. If you want good quality, you have to invest quite a bit. Especially if you value that the quilt is made in a pet-friendly way. Live plucking is banned in Europe, but many manufacturers do not specify where they source their down. Often, feathers are also mixed in with the down, which adds volume to the blanket, but the thermal properties for which the down blanket is known are lost or weakened. The more feathers are mixed in, the lower the quality of the quilt. In the past, down blankets were made without quilting, these are called balloon beds. The disadvantage of a balloon bed is that the filling can shift, balloon beds need to be shaken up more often. This cannot happen with the quilt, as the cassette quilting keeps the filling in place.

The cotton filling

Cotton quilted blankets are popular nowadays. They are suitable for people who tend to sweat a lot, as cotton is very absorbent. Synthetic fibers are becoming increasingly popular as filling. The advantage of synthetic fibers is that they are very easy to care for and also resistant to moisture. Quilted blankets with synthetic fibers are also preferred by people who suffer from allergies. The quilt can be washed at least at 60 degrees, which kills the mites.

Comforter in various sizes

Comforters are versatile in use. They can be used as bedspreads or as sofa throws. They come into play outside on the terrace when the days get cooler.

The comforter is available in all possible sizes:

  • Standard: 135x200 cm
  • Comfort: 155x200 cm

Or also as an oversized option:

  • 135x220 cm
  • 155x220 cm

For couples who want to sleep under one blanket together:

  • 200x200 cm smaller than 180 cm
  • 200x220 cm larger than 180
  • 240x220 cm Comfort size
  • 260x220 cm King Size

What types of comforters are there?

There are different types of comforters, which is determined by the filling:

  • Down comforter
  • Microfiber comforter
  • Duo comforter
  • Cotton comforter

How do I properly care for my comforter?

Of course, it depends on the filling. Natural hair blankets are self-cleaning and actually do not need to be washed. Regular intensive airing and drying is sufficient. They can also be washed in an emergency at 30 degrees on a gentle cycle, but they will felt very quickly. Down – comforters should also not be washed by yourself; here, too, long and thorough airing and drying is enough. If it is necessary to wash a down comforter, it requires some preparation. Inspect the comforter for tears, holes, or damage. These can tear further during washing, and the down or feathers would be distributed in the washing machine. The result would be a broken washing machine; the down is so fine that it can also settle in the pump and other parts of the washing machine. And the down comforter would also be ruined. If the down comforter has tears or holes, sew them up with a suitable thread beforehand.

Cleaning in the washing machine

The washing machine should have a capacity of more than five kilos; otherwise, the down or feathers would be compressed too much. One or two tennis balls should be added to the wash cycle, which helps to loosen clumps. Choose the gentle wash cycle at 30/40 °C and avoid fabric softener. You can also wash the blankets at 60 °C to kill dust mites, but be aware that the down or feathers may be damaged in the process.

How do I dry my blanket?

Down comforters should be dried in the dryer; air drying takes too long, and mold could form. Here, too, a low spin speed and low temperature should be chosen, and drying should be done in several steps. A drying cycle should not last longer than 20 minutes. Between drying cycles, the comforters should be shaken. One or two tennis balls should also be added during drying.

Easy-care blankets

Quilted blankets that have a synthetic filling are the easiest to care for. They can be washed at 60 degrees, which also kills dust mites. Allergy sufferers wash their blankets several times a year; here, the quilt with synthetic fibers is the most suitable, as they are very robust. Fabric softener can also be used here. Quilted beds with synthetic fibers can also be dried in the dryer. Therefore, researching the washing properties is worthwhile for synthetic fiber blankets before purchase. A good fiber blanket should demonstrate shape stability and not change after washing. Those who pay attention can regularly wash their fiber blanket comfortably at home without losing quality.
