Öko-Tex Certificate
What is the Öko-Tex certificate?
Why should mattresses be Öko-Tex certified?
What makes good mattresses? The answer is actually quite simple. A good mattress should fit individually. When buying a mattress, one should pay attention to personal needs and sleeping habits. On one hand. On the other hand, a new mattress should meet certain quality criteria. One of these criteria is a certification that the mattress has been tested for harmful chemicals. There are a whole lot of quality seals for textiles. One of the most well-known testing marks is the Öko-Tex Standard. The Öko-Tex Standard is a testing and certification system for textile products at all processing stages. In the early 1990s, independent testing institutes came together and developed the testing and certification system Öko-Tex® Standard.
What standards are there at Öko-Tex?
The Oeko-Tex Standard is a globally uniform testing and certification system. It is issued by the Oeko-Tex® Standard from the international community for research and testing in the field of textile ecology. The Oeko-Tex certificate distinguishes between three standards. All three standards from Oeko-Tex examine textiles at all processing stages of the textile production chain (textile raw products, textile intermediate products, textile end products):
- Öko-Tex Standard 100, also Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex
- Öko-Tex Standard 1000
- Öko-Tex Standard 100plus
Öko-Tex distinguishes textiles by product classes
- Textile products, Class I: textile products and textile toys for babies and toddlers
- Textile products, Class II: textile products that have a large part of their surface in direct skin contact
- Textile products, Class III: textile products that only have a small part of their surface in contact with the skin
- Textile products, Class IV: materials for decoration purposes with little or no skin contact, textile wall and floor coverings
What does the certificate Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 (Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex) stand for?
The Oeko-Tex Standard 100, since 2016 Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex, tests textile products based on the testing criteria developed by Oeko-Tex and the limit values developed by Oeko-Tex. The Oeko-Tex testing criteria partially exceed national requirements. The values tested by Oeko-Tex® Standard include among others.
- Formaldehyde, heavy metals, pesticides
- PCP, phthalates, organic tin compounds
- Prohibited chemicals, such as carcinogenic and allergenic dyes or flame retardants
What does the Oeko-Tex Standard certificate 1000 stand for?
The Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 certification includes additional testing criteria in the areas of "Ecological Production" and "Social Standards." The Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 label is therefore a certification for production facilities and serves as a complement to the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex). Companies and manufacturers of textile products and items have the opportunity to make statements about environmental and working conditions in their production facilities. The inspection of the production facilities of companies is carried out by an inspector from one of the 18 member institutes of the Oeko-Tex International Testing Community for Environmentally Friendly Textiles.
What does the Oeko-Tex certificate 100plus stand for?
A product testing and certification according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and a facility testing and certification according to Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 are prerequisites for a product certification according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100plus.
