Plate slatted frames consist of several plastic discs attached side by side, which can tilt in all directions. The plastic discs look like small plates, hence the name plate slatted frame. Plate Slatted Frame – Variants:

The variants described individually:

  • Fixed Plate Slatted Frame: A plate slatted frame with a rigid frame is particularly suitable for people who prefer a firm underlay. In the fixed plate slatted frame, the plates do move, but the frame is rigid. The slats are not springy.
  • Manually Adjustable Plate Slatted Frame: In the manually adjustable plate slatted frame, the head and foot sections can be adjusted independently and separately in height.
  • Electronic Slatted Frame: With the electronic slatted frame, a continuous adjustment of the lying positions is possible. You don't even need to get up for that. These slatted frames are mostly used in nursing homes or hospitals. The electronic slatted frame is also ideal for people with physical limitations.
  • Plate Slatted Frame: There is also the variant of the roll frame for the plate slatted frame. These are very space-saving and can be transported more easily.
  • Slatted frame hybrid: This slatted frame is made from a combination of slats and spring slats. The slats are usually placed in the shoulder and pelvic area. This allows for a gentler sinking in for these body areas.

Advantages of slatted frames

Disadvantages of slatted frames

With a good ergonomically responsive mattress, it can happen that the whole system reacts too strongly. Manufacturers therefore always offer these slatted frames in combination with firmer mattresses. Experience shows that otherwise the body may react with muscle tension and ultimately with tension. Since a slatted frame is traditionally considered a supportive element and the mattress represents the harmonizing element for the body, a system setup with a soft slatted frame at the bottom and a firmer mattress on top is rather unfavorable! Ideally, the slatted frame should have thicker support slats for the mounted slats, and the slats themselves should not be easily pushed down. It is also advantageous if as many slats as possible are present and the gaps between the individual slat elements are small. Due to this property – referred to as the "floating effect of the mattress" created by this slatted frame – this slatted frame should especially be recommended for lighter individuals. In sizes up to 200 x 140 cm, the slatted frame can then be used.

Risks

Attention, as a somewhat firmer mattress is often sold with this slatted frame, it can happen that the mattress builds up too much pressure at the contact points with the body, which usually causes problems for light and slender people. For heavier individuals or those with a stronger belly or heavier pelvic area, I would not recommend this slatted frame, as excessive sinking can lead to problems. The argument that everyone gets their own sleeping area with a mattress size of 200 x 140 cm without influencing each other is also critical to consider. Since the slats on which the plates are supported are continuous, it can happen that this slat begins to sag in the middle with two people, which would lead to a slight formation of a dip in the longitudinal direction of the mattress.

Mattress suitability for plate slatted frame

Before purchasing a modular frame, it should be clarified whether your mattress is suitable for this type of support. Pocket spring mattresses, for example, are unsuitable, among other reasons, because the material and suspension can be damaged by point loads. Foam mattresses, on the other hand, are extremely point-elastic and adapt to the springing individual elements of the modular frame. Cold foam and viscoelastic mattresses, which enhance the positive properties of a plate frame support, are therefore particularly well suited and achieve the best ergonomic effects.
