Gel cushion
What is a gel pillow?
Gel cushions and pillows for a healthy sleep
Are you sleeping poorly? Do you toss and turn every night on your pillow and wake up completely exhausted and with a tense neck? The bad news is that restless sleep can have many different causes. The good news is that most of these causes can be quickly remedied. Maybe your pillow just doesn't fit? One of the main reasons people sleep poorly is the use of inappropriate bedding. The mattresses are too hard, the blankets too warm, the bedding not breathable, the head pillow too soft. For healthy and restful sleep, bedding that is individually suitable for the sleeper is essential:
- Mattresses must be tailored to one's own sleeping habits and needs
- When buying pillows and head pillows, the sleeping position (side sleeper = side sleeper pillow) should be considered
- For blankets, personal temperature sensitivity should be taken into account
- Bedding should be breathable and climate-regulating
The choice of the right pillow and mattress
For a restful and healthy sleep, all bedding should be carefully selected. In addition to mattresses, pillows, especially the head pillow or sleeping pillow, are of particular importance. The pillow has a significant impact on our sleeping posture. If the pillow does not meet our needs, restless sleep and tension in the neck and body are the consequences. For people who already suffer from health issues in the neck, back, or shoulder area, the right pillow choice is even more important. If the head is not properly supported while lying down or sleeping, and the neck is not relieved, the problems with the neck, back, and shoulders can worsen, and chronic headaches may develop.

Is a gel pillow the right pillow for me?
In Germany, more than 300 types of pillows are available on the market. Finding the right pillow is not so easy in this pillow jungle. Pillows can be categorized into different pillow categories, for example, based on the filling used. Depending on the pillow filling, pillows have very different properties. A gel pillow with full gel or gel component differs significantly from a pillow filled with spelt husks.
Pillows with a filling made of natural material
Pillows made of natural material differ from a gel pillow especially in terms of care. While only the cover of a gel pillow should be washed, washing pillows with natural materials is significantly more difficult and labor-intensive, e.g. for pillows with the following fillings:
- Pillows with a filling made of feathers
- Pillows with a filling made of down
- Pillows with a filling made of husks
- Pillows with a filling made of horsehair
Pillows with a filling made of synthetic material
Which pillow with which filling is the right one cannot be said in general. A pillow with gel has completely different advantages and is better tailored to the needs of certain people than a head pillow made of another material, e.g.:
- Pillows with a filling made of cold foam
- Pillows with a filling made of gel foam
- Pillows with a filling made of gel
- Pillows with a filling made of viscoelastic material
What should you pay attention to when buying pillows, with or without gel?
Pillows and sleep pillows are cushions used as supportive bases for sleeping and lying down. Pillows are meant to stabilize the body while sleeping and lying down and to provide pressure relief, allowing the body to relax and making it possible to fall asleep at all. Many pillows fulfill this function, but not all pillows should. The head is not optimally supported when lying down, the neck is not relieved, and the spine sags. When buying a pillow, the following points should be considered. The sinking depth into the mattress, for example, determines the correct height of the pillows. The deeper you sink, the higher the height of the pillows should be. So choose a pillow that fits the mattress.
Sleeping position is important with gel pillows and mattress choice
A pillow should be chosen to match one's own sleeping habits and needs: In what sleeping position do I sleep? Do I tend to sweat while sleeping? Do I have problems in the neck and shoulder area? Pillows, sleeping pillows, and head pillows must match the mattresses. Mister Sandman makes it easier to find the right mattress with the Mister Sandman mattress finder. The mattresses made in Germany and Öko-Tex certified by Mister Sandman are suitable for different sleeping positions. The size of the pillows should be taken into account. Sizes larger than 40x80 are often too large. Additionally, it should be noted:
- Make sure that the size of the bedding matches the pillows. Bedding should be the appropriate size for the pillows. If the bedding does not fit and fabric hangs over, it can negatively affect sleep
- In case of pre-existing conditions in the neck and spine, a conventional sleeping pillow is usually not sufficient. In this case, an orthopedic neck pillow or neck support pillow should be used
What is a gel pillow?
Gel pillows are pillows that are either completely filled with gel or contain gel components. Unlike traditional pillow fillings, gel in gel pillows is a high-tech material. Gel pillows have special properties
- Gel pillows adapt particularly well to the head and neck due to the gel filling
- Gel pillows with gel have very good supportive properties
- Gel pillows with gel are very suitable for allergy sufferers
- Gel pillows with gel adapt to every movement
Gel pillows with different types of gel
Head pillows can be filled with different types of gel. The type of gel used influences the properties of the head pillows. It is also crucial for the properties of gel pillows whether the pillow is completely filled with gel or only contains gel components. Gel pillows are especially suitable for people who have health complaints:
- Head pillows with full gel or gel component are suitable for allergy sufferers
- Head pillows with full gel or gel component are suitable for decubitus patients (anti-decubitus)
- Head pillows with full gel or gel component are suitable for people with orthopedic problems
- Head pillows with full gel or gel component are suitable for people who need an orthopedic seat cushion
- Head pillows with a gel component as head pillows are suitable for all sleeping positions (gel pillows as side sleeper pillows)
What types of gel pillows are there?
The range of pillows filled with gel or a gel component is large:
- Gel pillows as sleep pillows (e.g. as side sleeper pillows)
- Gel pillows as head pillows (e.g. as neck pillows)
- Gel pillows as seat cushions (e.g. as office seat cushions)
Gel pillows with full gel and gel component
With pillows and sleep pillows, cushions that only have a gel component are more common. In the medical and orthopedic field, pillow models with full gel filling occur much more frequently. A pillow with full gel filling can be imagined similarly to a pillow that is filled with water. When pressure is applied to the pillow, the gel filling is displaced in all directions, thus the gel pillow provides optimal pressure relief. The gel in pillows has a higher density than water and therefore offers sufficient support. The following gel pillows are available:
- Gel pillows as anti-decubitus pillows
- Gel pillows as neck pillows or neck support pillows
- Gel pillows as hemorrhoid pillows
- Gel pillows as heel pillows
- Gel pillows as foot pillows
- Gel pillows with full gel filling are known for their strong pressure-relieving properties.
Properties of gel pillows
Gel pillows are a third type of pillow alongside foam-filled pillows and natural-filled pillows, and have a number of special properties compared to other pillows:
- Gel pillows provide extremely high lying comfort
- Gel pillows help with sleep problems, neck pain, and back issues
- Gel pillows offer shape adjustment with changing sleep positions
- Gel pillows provide stable head support
- Gel pillows contain no animal products
- Gel pillows have a cooling effect
Does a gel pillow need a cover?
Gel pillows made of full gel have a special coating. This coating provides excellent hygienic properties but is rather unsuitable for direct contact of the head on the gel pillow. The gel pillow surface cannot transport the sweat released during sleep. Therefore, a gel pillow requires a cover. The gel pillow can usually be purchased together with a gel pillow cover. The fact that the gel pillow cover is usually included when purchasing the gel pillow has the advantage that one does not have to look for a cover elsewhere. Gel pillows are usually not available in a size that is common for other pillows. Therefore, it is difficult to find the appropriate bed linen or the appropriate pillowcase for the gel pillow. It is advisable to buy additional covers when purchasing the gel pillow so that one always has a spare cover ready.
Gel pillows are very well suited as neck pillows or neck support pillows
Neck pillows and neck support pillows are special pillows that adapt to the body and thus support and relax the head, neck, and spine. The selection of neck pillows is large:
- Neck pillows and neck support pillows in different sizes
- Neck pillows and neck support pillows in various shapes, such as in the form of neck rolls or in the form of neck cylinders
- Neck pillows and neck support pillows with different fillings:
- Gel
- Technogel
- Gel foam or visco foam
- Grains
- Neck pillows and neck support pillows from various manufacturers
- Neck pillows and neck support pillows with very large differences in quality and price
Gel pillows with gel foam
Depending on the filling, the properties of neck pillows and neck support pillows differ. Neck pillows and neck support pillows made of full gel are primarily used in the medical field for neck pain. More common are gel pillow models that only include gel components, for example, a combination of gel foam, viscoelastic material, and cold foam.
What is gel foam?
Contrary to what the name suggests, gel foam is not foamed gel. Gel foam is a cold foam product to which gel has been added. Gel foam is used for various types of mattresses and pillows. Gel foam is breathable and provides little breeding ground for dust mites. Gel foam is mostly found in mattresses and pillows used in combination with cold foam or molded foam. A product with gel foam is very suitable for people with complaints in the spine and pelvis. Even with serious complaints like pressure sores, a pillow with gel foam, gel, or Visco can be very helpful:
- Gel foam reacts to pressure but not to heat
- Gel foam offers optimal pressure relief
- Gel foam has a high recovery force
- Gel foam provides excellent support
Differences between gel foam and Visco
Visco was originally developed by NASA for space travel. Just like gel foam, Visco is a high-tech material that is used for pillows due to its special properties. Because of its characteristics, Visco, like gel foam, is also found primarily in the medical field. The main distinguishing feature between Visco and gel foam is that Visco has a "memory." Through pressure and heat, Visco contours precisely to the body. A return to its original shape occurs slowly. Therefore, Visco is also referred to as memory foam. The ability for maximum body adaptation is one of the most characteristic features of Visco. While gel foam has a quick return to shape, the memory effect applies to Visco. Visco reacts to heat, while gel reacts to pressure.

Technogel in gel pillows
Another high-tech material or rather, gel, is Technogel. Technogel is a special gel that was developed in 1990 by Massimo Losio. Technogel is a polyurethane-based gel that was originally developed for use in medicine. Thanks to its advantages, the gel Technogel is also used for bedding, such as pillows.
- The gel Technogel is soft
- The gel Technogel is breathable
- The gel Technogel is odorless
- The gel Technogel has a high adaptability
- The gel Technogel is non-toxic
- The gel Technogel is free of plasticizers
- The gel Technogel is durable

Properties of Technogel pillows
Technogel pillows have properties that enable pleasant and restful sleep:

Side sleeper pillows with gel?
In Germany, most people are side sleepers, yet very few use a side sleeper pillow. However, purchasing side sleeper pillows is a sensible thing to do because:
- Side sleeper pillows are tailored to the needs of side sleepers
- Side sleeper pillows facilitate breathing and can reduce snoring
- Side sleeper pillows prevent back pain
- Side sleeper pillows prevent misalignments of the neck
- Side sleeper pillows are very suitable for pregnant women
- Side sleeper pillows are very suitable for overweight individuals
- Side sleeper cushions relieve the cervical vertebrae
Side sleeper cushions with gel foam
Gel cushions as side sleeper cushions with a full gel filling are very rare. The most common are side sleeper cushions with gel foam, that is, cold foam with gel component. Gel cushions with gel component are perfect for both side sleeper cushions and back sleeper cushions due to their high adaptability.
Seat cushions with gel
Seat cushions come in various sizes and shapes. There are seat cushions in the form of bean bags and seat cushions in the form of floor cushions (poufs). Seat cushions can be used as simple pads for chairs and benches. However, seat cushions are also used in the medical field for anti-decubitus treatment or for wheelchair users. Seat cushions are also particularly popular among yogis or other meditating people. There is also a corresponding offer of seat cushions for people who value orthopedic correct sitting (in the office) for prevention or due to existing complaints. Seat cushions are available in the following variants:
- Seat cushions with full gel
- Seat cushions with gel and memory foam
- other combinations.
Properties of seat cushions with full gel
Seat cushions with full gel have special properties and are therefore suitable for a variety of people with very different needs:
- Seat cushions have a relieving effect
- Seat cushions relieve the spine through pressure distribution
- Seat cushions promote a healthy sitting posture, for example in the office
- Seat cushions can be used everywhere
- Seat cushions adapt individually to the body
